quick critique: heart-warming summer musical movie “Mamma Mia”

“Mamma mia, here I go again – my my, how can I resist you?” Have you started to sing along the second you read this columns title? 🙂 Mamma Mia! is catchy. It is vivid. It is pure passion — passion for love and for life.

Oh the sweet scenery… The movie was shot on beautiful islands in Greece: crystal blue waters, famous Greek white houses and a clear blue sky. The setting of a movie makes for so much of how the viewers respond to it emotionally. And this one really hit it off.

If you were not born on another planet, you will not need me to tell you how great the musical soundtrack is. And if you are in fact from another planet, you are most probably not a reader of this column and therefore again do not need me to convince you that ABBA’s Mamma Mia! soundtrack is a classic and that the lyrics should be known by heart by every living creature. The musical version of the movie with Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski and Dominic Cooper — just to name the main characters — is brilliant. They sing with such passion and accuracy and play with the lyrics with such deep emotions — may it be joy or sadness — that you are carried away with every word they sing. (Talking about actors achieving emotional response by the audience.) Not only their singing, but also acting and dancing is so much fun to watch.

The movie invites you to be fully drawn in the characters’ lives and feel what they feel. Forget about your surroundings and who might be listening to you singing or watching you dance and be part of the Mamma Mia! mania.

Now! Without further ado: prepare a little late night snack, open up a bottle of Rosé, pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy the brilliance of this summer musical — created for us to sing and dance along all over the living room, getting anything heavy out of our systems — created for making us cry our eyes out and laugh our hearts happy!

Happy summer weekend!
